CHOIR SINGS MUSIC FOR A ROYAL JUBILEE
The majesty of the music played at Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation in 1953 will be performed by Urmston Choral Society at their Jubilee celebration concert being held at St. Monica’s Church, Irlam Road in Flixton on Wednesday, April 18. This will be repeated at St. Edmund’s Church, Alexandra Road South in Whalley Range on Saturday, April 21, both starting at 7.30pm.
The concert will feature well-known Coronation choral pieces and other music with Royal connections including Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Parry’s I Was Glad. The soloists for both concerts will be Beverley Shuttleworth (soprano), Judith Briscall (alto), Kenneth Boyd (tenor) and Maurice Rushby (bass) with Julie Parker (conductor), Derrick Cantrell (organist) and Gareth Curtis (keyboard).
Tickets for both concerts cost £6 (concessions £5/children and students £1.50) and can be obtained from Choir member Maxine Summers, Tel: 0161 748 09
Said Julie Parker, the Choir’s conductor: “This concert promises to be one of the most outstanding that Urmston Choral has ever performed. The regal music reflects the magnificence of the occasion and gives a tremendous opportunity for local people to celebrate this very special event in the Royal calendar.”

MUSICAL MAESTRO TO TAKE ON CHARITY BIKE RIDE
A music teacher/choral conductor from Stretford, whose only cycling experience until recently has been an occasional ride to the shops, is to take up the challenge of riding over 100 miles to support a Ugandan charity.
Julie Parker (50), who lives in King’s Road, Stretford, and is Conductor of Urmston Choral Society, was so inspired by a friend who told her about the health and education programme being carried out by Christian Relief Uganda (CRU), that she signed up to take part in a charity bike ride. Apart from cycling around the local area, in July Julie joined fellow Urmston Choral Society member, Theo Langfield (78) on the 62-mile charity ride between Manchester-Blackpool on July 8, raising almost £500 towards the Ugandan charity.
The 100 mile ride for the Ugandan project will take place on Sunday, September 4 starting from WythenshawePark and circling several Cheshire villages including Knutsford, Nantwich and Wilmslow before returning to WythenshawePark for the finish.
Said Julie, “I’m really keen to support Christian Relief Uganda as the work they do is so important to the lives of many Ugandan people. The charity helps vulnerable children and their families in the Kamuli district, one of the poorest regions of Uganda. The aim of the CRU is to enable the people to transform their own lives through education and community-based programmes. Another of their projects is to send qualified dental practitioners to schools and rural areas to provide oral hygiene education and pain relief clinics, as well as undertaking special needs education for over 70 deaf and hearing-impaired pupils.”
Members of Urmston Choral have so far pledged £250 to support Julie in her charitable mission but commercial sponsorship or further donations would be welcome by Julie, who can be contacted on 0161 865 5969 or 07732 556381. You can also give on-line at www.justgiving.com/Julie-Parker2.
